State of Nevada
Let's jump right into the Colin Kaepernick (CK) brouhaha. It's obvious, and has been for a long time, we are a very divided country. Factions have lined up against each other taking polarizing positions and embracing the core belief the other side must be destroyed. Not bested mind you but destroyed.
Into this cauldron of hatred and venom steps CK and instantaneously becomes a pawn on the political chessboard. On the regressive statist left he is praised as a man of principle and courage. On the zealot right he is condemned as a fool at best and an anti-American traitor at worst.
To see how absurd this whole thing is let's play a game of "What if....."
If CK, took any one of those positions his status would automatically be reversed. He would be reviled as something less than human by the regressive statist left and conversely be elevated to near sainthood by the zealot right.
It seems as though no one loves freedom. Oh, we love the freedom we want. But a freedom we don't want? A freedom or idea we hate? Then it’s "Destroy!" "Destroy!" Someday this is all going to blow up on us but probably by the time it does CK will be a footnote in history. Like the two track athletes who gave the "Black Power" salute at the 1968 200-meter Olympic medal ceremony.
Harry Reid went to Reno and said Mrs. Clinton will win Nevada because: "I think there aren't enough white, uneducated men in Nevada to elect him (Trump)." (Review Journal 8/24/16) In that one sentence Mr. Reid epitomized the hatred and venom that has come to dominate what passes for political discourse today. Reid could have supported his prediction in a dozen different ways all with a positive spin that either he or his staff could have created. Instead he chose the lowest road possible. I'm surprised he didn't quote Mr. Obama and his denigration of people "clinging to their bibles and guns."
I believe something has gone very wrong with Mr. Reid. Here is a man whose entire career exists because one of the truly great liberals in Nevada history, Gov. Mike O’Callaghan mentored him from the start. Gov. Mike was a class act all the way. Passionate, tough, fair and decent to the core of his being. In a way I'm glad Mike isn't around to see, in my opinion, the horrible regressive statist Mr. Reid has become.
Observation on Elections:
The RJ's front page headline on 9/1 was great news: "Jackpot in July: $1 billion for state" Statewide
revenue was up 9.96%. Clark County up 10.22%. The Strip up 16.77%.
Inside on page 5A was a graph that had a lot of red (deficit) numbers. For example: Laughlin (1.60%),
North Las Vegas (4.26%), Boulder Strip (8.19%), Balance of County (2.47%). With only Downtown +2.53%
and Mesquite +1.17% the "Jackpot" seems to be awfully narrow.
The Olympic athletes at the '68 Games were: 200-meter Gold Medal winner Tommie Smith and 200-meter Bronze Medal winner John Carlos.
