The SNWA invested some $150,000 plus of we taxpayers’ hard earned money for the most colorful binder full of just what they wanted; “Crap”. Was the Hobbs & Ong report a crap shoot? As far as you and I are concerned it sure was. There is a 20 page executive report that if you were to read it you would soon see that the level of people this was meant to impress must all be graduates of our Clark County School District. By that do you think I mean it falls in the 32 percentile of intellectual awareness? That is correct. If this makes no sense to you that’s exactly what the executive report is like. Also following that are 120 pages, with only some 60% of them covered with inked wisdom, or some such thing, from the firm of Hobbs & Ong Associates the consultant contracted for the job. After that there are 500 pages of colorful graphs that use more expensive ink than you can imagine and I suspect most of it will have less than a 10% review by anyone, which is fine because that accomplishes the desire of the SNWA. When I say that this is as usual another controlled, meaningless study that does everything but tell a balanced story about this economy, I mean it in capital letters. The report, from my first review, dwells on what happens to our economic balance sheet if we suddenly shut down this maniacal growth (with little or no quality of life) and layoff some 77,000 or so mostly uneducated, nonjourneyman type housing construction workers who do not even care to speak our language. Well first of all what these construction workers will do is what comes natural in the industry – simply drift away to the next place they sense there is a construction job. Interestingly a large percentage of these people have little or no health, retirement, or any other kind of benefit and depend for most of their health care, social care, thousands of classrooms and the likes to be paid for by we taxpayers and in the case of retirees their savings of A lifetime. From what I have seen so far this report looks at the dollar loss of these jobs and no where do I find the improved dollar benefit from them leaving town and taking their problems with them. But of course this is not what Mulroy and company at the SNWA wanted, so from that point H&O earned their pay. They did exactly what they were told to do, look at the down side but not the plus side of a balanced slow growth economy. There is so much more in balance to talk about on this issue that it would take me another day to compose the story. Importantly the money was spent for such a simpleton insight to our economy it was a shame to waste any ones time on it. Several sessions back of the legislature when Dina Titus and her “ring around the valley” was a hot issue I did a complete dissertation from beginning to end in a very brief county wide people, planners, and politician hands on master plan workshop concept hoping the legislature would see the wisdom of a good plan by the people would not require a legal boundaries law to be successful. The master planning by the community concept was to take place with small working segments over the entire county to see and hear what everyone thought made the area, livable, functional, fun and profitable for those in business, with the home owners rights protected. This would make the taxpaying homeowner king of his castle for certain. I know it takes, work, a wish, and a prayer, but it can be done. Citizens actively defending their rights is a must when you are dealing with the python in your midst known as Big Government. |
